Rex Southwell was born and raised in the family home in Kalkaska, Michigan. He grew up in Coldsprings Township while there was still virgin timber standing. He and wife Evelyn raised their family across the road from Grover and Grace, his parents, who are also the main characters in Tall Trees, Tall People. Since retirement, he has built cedar canoes and grandfather clocks. He now lives in Port Charlotte, Florida, and looks forward to summers in a cottage at Southwell Lake.
